Retail in South Africa

We observe strong growth in the use of private label brands as a percentage-of-basket in developing markets. We find evidence for sustained growth, but an expectation for eventual convergence across developing and developed markets. However, we argue that producers in South Africa face a dual problem of also experiencing the fastest growth in demand for green consumption. This is surprising, given the large proportion of South African retail taking place in the informal sector. Unique challenges and efforts at developing responses to these market pressures are discussed. [Andrew Montandon. European Retail Research, 2014] [Link]
